Tadashi Aoyama

Tadashi Aoyama studies connections among the atmosphere, ionosphere, and geomagnetic field using observations from low-Earth-orbit satellites such as CHAMP and Swarm, ground magnetometers, and GNSS-TEC.

Research Interests

His research examines small-scale magnetic and electron-density variations observed from satellites and the ground, and their possible relationships with atmospheric and magnetospheric waves.

  • Magnetic ripples and field-aligned currents: He examines the distribution and characteristics of small magnetic variations observed by CHAMP and Swarm, including their possible relationships with lower-atmospheric disturbances such as typhoons and rainfall.
  • Ionospheric variation during volcanic eruptions: He compares satellite magnetic, GNSS-TEC, and ground magnetic observations of events such as the 2015 Calbuco eruption to study atmospheric waves and the ionospheric response.
  • Pc3 pulsations and plasmaspheric resonance: He examines the spectral structure of short-period magnetic pulsations and compares variations associated with eruptions, earthquakes, and the solar wind.

Comparisons between observations take account of timing, position, observing conditions, and uncertainty when testing hypotheses.

Education

Aoyama graduated from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Tohoku University, and completed graduate study at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Science, earning a PhD in Science.

Papers and Presentations

He has contributed as an author or co-author to papers on magnetic ripples observed by Swarm, field-aligned currents and TEC and ground magnetic variations during the 2015 Calbuco eruption, and Pc3 pulsations. Titles, authors, years, and DOIs are listed on the publications page.

Public presentation records name Aoyama as a first author or co-author at JpGU, SGEPSS, AGU, EGU, AOGS, IUGG, IAGA, and research workshops. Records from 2014–2026 identify 65 contributions (58 conference records and 7 workshop records), checked in October 2026. This count reflects authorship of distinct contributions rather than the number of talks delivered by Aoyama.

Selected presentations illustrate the development of these research themes:

Approach to Analysis and Explanation

Data sources, preprocessing, and filter settings provide the context for explaining what a figure can show. Observations are separated from interpretations, with procedures that allow alternative explanations to be considered. Research hypotheses are not presented as established causation, forecasts, or warnings.

He also uses generative AI as an aid in his research, checking generated information and suggestions against original papers, data, and execution results. Scientific judgment remains his responsibility.
