Processing Flow

Several decisions and processing steps lie between acquiring data and presenting a figure. Following that sequence helps readers understand the assumptions behind a result and where checks are needed.

DATA & METHODS5 SECTIONS

Prepare Data for Comparison

Define the target interval and acquisition range, then check formats, time references, units, and coordinates. Any conversions should retain a link to the source data. Time offsets or unit differences can affect the entire comparison.

Check Quality and Gaps

Quality flags, missing values, outliers, and instrument conditions inform which intervals to use or exclude. Where interpolation or manual judgment is involved, its location and rationale are stated. Values filling a gap must remain distinguishable from actual observations.

Analyze and Plot for the Research Question

Filtering, differencing, spectra, mapping, and comparisons between datasets are selected according to the question. Edge effects, baseline dependence, and observation location are checked, with the selected settings and important alternatives recorded.

Figures include units, time references, legends, processing conditions, and cautions. A clear workflow still requires separate checks of the inputs and settings.

Connect Results Back to the Processing Record

Linking input data, code and settings, output files, and figure versions makes updates and reanalysis easier to review.
